Golden Girls name is now worth $2bn – Al Jazeera
Golden Girls actor Christina Hendricks was among the women who were given names for their characters.
The name of the film’s lead, Carrie Fisher, was given to the main character, Fisher’s granddaughter.
“The Golden Girls are a group of five young girls, and Carrie Fisher is one of them,” producer Simon Kinberg told the New York Times.
The names are the result of a long-running contest between writers.
“We started it in 1997 and the last two years we’ve gotten some really amazing names, but we’re still in the beginning stages,” Kinberg said.
“So the first time I saw Christina Hendricks, I said, ‘That’s a real cool name.'”
The name, which is derived from the Latin phrase “grande” meaning “big”, is thought to be a play on the word “grandia”, meaning “grandchild”.
The film’s producers hope it will spark interest in the women’s careers.
The show has been renewed for a fourth season.
